Better Living Through Creating

Last night I argued with both my son and my husband. It's a rarity anymore for Dennis and I to argue; not so much with my son Ben and I, since he's 12 and already exhibiting teen aged behavior. Still, it was very upsetting and I awoke this morning feeling upset and frazzled.

The only thing I thought might make me feel better was to enjoy some craft time, which I haven't had much of this week.

So, after spending a few weeks admiring it all, I finally got around to creating some tags of my own using some of Karla's wallpaper:

Now that I look at them, you can really tell I was having "the blues", eh?!

I used lots of vintage seam binding, pages from sheet music and dictionaries, old buttons and jewelry. Most of the pieces are completely vintage!

I really enjoyed myself! I think I'll keep one or two for myself, and put the rest in my Etsy shop.

Laurie, Sorry you had a difficult time, but just look how creative your were today. These tags are beautiful. My favorite is the pink lady,so elegant!

Of course, I like the pink one best! Was that the last one you made when you started feeling a little better?

Hello, world!  Welcome to my blog!   My name is Laurie, and I call my blog "Indulge Your Shelf" because I often post about the pretty things that catch my eye at antique stores, thrift shops, estate sales, street fairs, flea markets and the like -- and end up on my shelf at home, or in my Etsy shop by the same name !  My maternal grandmother had a great love for pretty old things, and it was she who taught me to rummage for treasures in thrift shops, to collect what I love, to sew, and to embroider.  And, that's another thing I write about often on my blog: creating! True Victorian style: black glass buttons

This past Sunday afternoon I went to my local button club meeting -- and it was fun, hands on, and informative.  The topic this month was black glass buttons . Many of the black glass buttons you see in antique stores were made pre-1918; as a result of Queen Victoria's mourning attire, black was very in vogue.  Although you might hear black glass buttons referred to as "jet", jet is a different kind of coal glass, and is much rarer.  I'm told you can tell the difference between black glass and jet in that jet will float in water. After we went over the different classifications for black glass through the National Button Society , we had a chance to dig through some little tubs of buttons (called "poke boxes" by buttoners) to see if we could find examples of all the types we'd covered.
