The day we Played Big
This past Saturday, Rebecca and I got to go to Wendy Brightbill's painting class, Playing Big! We had been looking forward to it for months!
It was held at Jeanne Oliver's home in nearby Castle Rock. First, let me say, Jeanne's new studio space is the perfect place to be for relaxation, creativity, and beautiful, comfortable surroundings that inspire you in your art.
Look at this little cart full of wallpaper -- she is after my own heart!
In class, which was all day, Wendy taught us how to create a work of abstract art using her own method.
We began by painting neutral colors using watercolor and acrylic paints, and then went on to add more color, contrast, and details.
Wendy is an attentive, generous teacher!
We created as many pieces as we wanted to/had time for. There were artists from all over the country in class, and I met some wonderful people! We had a lot of fun -- and learned so much.
I'm not completely satisfied with how it came out, but, do you know what? I'm very proud of myself for letting go and trying all the techniques that Wendy taught. For a first try at anything like this, I think the resulting painting is interesting. It makes me happy!
And Wendy gifted us all with this beautiful, hand painted moleskin notebooks for the class!
The class included snacks and lunch prepared by Jeanne and her family in her home, which she so graciously opened up to us as well. It is a showplace -- everywhere you look there is something elegant, yet cozy. Jeanne's house really reflects who she is! The food was beyond amazing.
The day ended with pizza and drinks on Jeanne's patio -- it was a beautiful, warm evening to gather and celebrate the day, new friends, and new creative inspirations. I urge you to take a class at Jeanne's studio whenever you have an opportunity!

Here are the three pieces I made that day, in progress; they are drying in the sunshine.
And here is my one finished piece.I'm not completely satisfied with how it came out, but, do you know what? I'm very proud of myself for letting go and trying all the techniques that Wendy taught. Rebecca and I both felt it was a relaxing, restorative day!
Wendy did a video version of the class, which I've begun to watch so I can continue to learn. I'm excited! You can get the class on Jeanne's website -- it's only $18! What a bargain! Of course, as soon as I create another painting I'm happier with, you will hear all about it!And Wendy gifted us all with this beautiful, hand painted moleskin notebooks for the class!
