It never gets old

This month I've been blogging for here at Indulge Your Shelf for ten years.  If you've been with me for any time at all, then you know that I adore treasure hunting at thrift shops.  It just never gets old.  Over the last decade I'd been hearing about the wonders of the Goodwill "bins" from other junk lovers in other states, and then we finally got one nearby a few years ago.  Oh my goodness -- it takes thrifting to a whole new level.
Finding this tablecloth there just made my day.  It's exactly the kind of thing that makes my heart leap -- especially at this time of the year!
The graphics...
look at that sleigh!  With visions of sugarplums dancing in my head, I sorted through those dusty bins and came up with a few fun little touches:
the holly berry "ball" on the far right is going to be washed up and put to use immediately in the last of my Christmas crafting!
And, here's what I mean by treasure: how is it even possible that something like the glass ribbon candy Old World Christmas ornament, new with its tag, ends up in the bins -- much less survives them?  If you've been there, you know exactly what I mean!
It's a Christmas Miracle.  I'm just sayin'.

Today and tomorrow I hope to make headway on the little Christmas decorating I am planning to do.  The kitties are still too young to trust with my delicate treasures, but last year's "unbreakable" tree was very nice and will get a repeat, I think!

Great finds, especially the tablecloth! And those ornaments...it truly is amazing that such delicate things can be found in those bins unbroken. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

Wow, that glass ribbon candy and multi-coloured bell are making me feel so connected with my Christmas' of my youth. Those 2, in particular, are exactly as I remember them.

The bins here have never been cheaper ($.48 a pound) or fuller! The reason here is because GW has started charging so darn much for their donations that even at half off most of the folks who shop there can no longer afford the clothes etc.... making the bins THE place to be to get bargains! We have an OKC meetup about once every 2 months specifically to go to the bins together -- then we head over to Salvation Army where Wednesdays are half price day -- then to lunch to share all our good fortune and treasures with each other -- also our selling stories on Ebay and/ Etsy -- and now Mercai and Poshmark. We vary in age from some in our 20's to our oldest member who is 68. It's a wonderful experience and I look forward to it each time. Our next meeting is this coming Wednesday. I'll be thinking of you and hoping for such great Christmas finds when I go!!

I don’t get to our “bins” very often anymore because I’m doing my best to cut down on my hoard of stuff. I went to one of my fave thrift shops that helps women and families in need. The store isn’t very big and the volunteers really know how to create beautiful display. I’ve gotten some great Christmas ornaments and decorations in the last couple of weeks. I don’t have pets so I can put whatever I need on display. One of our large antique stores is liquidating on weekends at half price. I’ve gotten a few things for crafting. I’ll return between Christmas and Nee Years Eve to see if anything I really want is still there and super discounted. I can only hope but will be fine if I find nothing. It’s an adventure to look forward to.

Flagler College in St. Augustine: the Tiffany connection

We visited this wonderful building that began its life in 1888 as a lavish hotel built by Henry Flagler, one of the founders of Standard Oil, and now houses Flagler College . It is such a beautiful old building and in it we saw: these fabulous Tiffany chandeliers... on a spectacular painted and embossed ceiling in one of the hotel's drawing rooms.   I apologize for the quality of the indoor photos -- it was quite dark in the building. I had to laugh at these painted cherubs on the ceiling... and the way their ribbony robes encircle the chandelier mount! This large clock over the mantle is special because it's a Thomas Edison clock and because it is made from one piece of rare onyx.  We were told that Edison's "signature" on his clocks is the use of the incorrect Roman numeral "4". O Christmas tree, jeweled Christmas tree...

Earlier in the season Rebecca and I went to a craft fair at a local high school, and there was one booth with the CUTEST little jeweled, framed Christmas trees! The gal was nice enough to let me photograph them.  Sorry it's kind of blurry, but it was dark in that high school gym! I know it's an older kind of craft (from the '60s and '70s) but she made them sweet -- not gaudy at all.  We were both SO inspired. So, last week we made it happen.  I brought a bunch of my old, broken vintage jewelry, some velvet, glue,  old frames, and we sat in her dining room and made a forest of little trees! It was so simple: first, we took a vintage frame and covered the backing with velvet.  We just glued it on. Then, we took our time arranging bits and pieces of jewels into a Christmas tree shape.
